Dear William,
Your dad and I love you very much. Today you are three months old and you depend on us for everything. Each day watching you grow and develop is exciting for us. Your little toothless, sometimes-crooked grin melts our hearts as quickly as your sad little tears. Right now we are happy to see to any need you have however often these needs may occur. But, one day down the road, you will begin to learn how to meet some of those needs on your own.
When that time comes, we promise to support you, encourage you, and occasionally let you fail. Because we recognize the value of a struggle, your dad and I will let go of your hand when it's time for you to have a go at it on your own, and because we want you to be strong and courageous, we'll step back, bite our tongues, and trust the Lord when you need to fight your own battles.
Though it may be hard to one day see our darling baby boy become a man, we vow to do so with grace. We'll do these things because we would never want anyone to view you as a mollycoddle and, more importantly, we don't want you to be one.
Our deepest desire for you, son, is that you'll be a confident but humble man who loves and serves God no matter the cost. We'll be praying for you, and you can always call on us when you need to, but with the Lord's wisdom and mercy we will teach you how to recognize when you need to not call on us.
